I need 5 gallons total… So I was hoping I could get a pair of 2 gallon tanks on either side of my bed behind the wheel well and a single gallon on my frame rail.
2 2 gallon tanks in the back. (Somehow attach them to my bed)
And a 1 gallon Viair on my frame rail.
I’m a little lost guys… I’m afraid to buy another 2 gallon tank because I don’t know if I can even get the first one to mount under my bed.
OKay, so I’m really not getting anywhere at all… Putting the compressor on the outside frame rail is too difficult and won’t be high enough so it’s not exposed. There is absolutely no other space for the compressor except the grill. I could put a small bracket down and only use two screws for it. Then the compressor would be flat on all fours.
What do you all think?
As far as the tanks go… It’s a nightmare… My mechanic said he would look at my truck Tuesday to see if they can even be fabricated to the underside of my bed.
I’m loosing hope that my truck won’t be honking soon…if ever.
Ah, you’ll get it honking. I have my little Honda honking lol. I think the compressor will work there if it isn’t blocking any airflow to your radiator. Are you sure you can’t fit it underneath somewhere?
It’s not that I need brackets. It’s that there isn’t enough physical room on my truck for a 2 gallon tank without using the bed. Not to mention that its pretty low to the ground. I guess this is a con having a mid size truck.
My mechanic is gonna look at my truck on Tuesday. If he doesn’t think he can mount it behind the wheel well like in the picture I posted, Im returning my tank and getting a 5 gallon one to put in my bed…
I can only pray that I can put these tanks under the wheel well. I really don’t want a 5 gallon tank, P3 and a small plastic toolbox in my bed… It’ll take up so much room.
Ever think about loosing the spare tire and put it in the bed. Then mount your stuff in the location of spare tire? You can get the tanks on the frame but might have switch to a slim tank. Mounts could be fabbed up two compressor mounts on frame rail too. I had no room on my 98 dodge 2500 diesel with 5" exhaust but I was able to get tank mounted between the exhaust and fuel tanks above the drive shaft. Never say never it can be done. I know we all have heard 10 pounds of **** in a 5 pound bag. But a little patience and thought it can be concurred.
On HB site it says that the 3 gallon 2 port tank is 20.75 in.
I just measured out 20" right there and you can see it’ll fit. That means I can put a 3 gallon up front… My shockers will go in the grill like hondaguy has it and my 2 gallon tank will go on my frame rail.
Look good? Will I be blocking the radiator too much?
You wont be blocking the radiator too much with horns up there, Im a little confused seeing the tank there. It looks like you can barely see the tank in the frame rails, I would go with that idea. Just remember that the compressor goes wherever the first tank goes. I see the wheels in your mind going. You’re on the right track. Trust, I had the same mind battle when desinging my setup because I didnt want ANYTHING in my bed OR in the spare tire well.
Sorry for the confusion, but I have it ALL figured out.
I’m putting 1 2 gallon tank in front of my radiator (as pictured) and one 2 gallon on my frame rail as you see in the picture wildhorn quoted. I’m going to put all my shockers in the grill facing down… The compressor will be connected to the tank that is on the rail. I’ll have 4 gallons total and I was told that 4 gallons is plenty for a P3, if not I’ll add a 1 gallon tank to top it off at 5.
Each set of horns will be on it’s own momentary switch and that’s not a big deal.
I’m going to tie both tanks together with 1/2" line.
The last thing I need to do is buy a right angle drill so I can mount my tank high enough. In the picture where I am holding up my tank…That is as high as I can get my tank on the rail… Some of it will be exposed, but luckily I’m not going to use the ports that are hanging out low.
I’ve also figured out how to keep a P3 out of my bed… I’m going to somehow strap/bracket it to my spare tire, but allow it to be easily unbolted in case I ever need to get to the spare… That way I can throw the punctured tire in the bed with the P3… Or throw the P3 in the back of my quad cab and put the bad tire either in the bed or under the bed…
Ok cool sounds good. You can use one of the those bottom ports for a drain cock so you can get the water out on occassion. Cant wait to see the finished product.
I just realized that if I mounted a P3 directly under my spare tire I would literally have about 1 inch clearance from the ground… Doesn’t seem like a good idea especially if I went over a speed bump :). I’m also WAY too lazy to move the spare and I really don’t wanna have the spare in my bed anyway… I like things set in one place correctly…
Nonetheless, I am determined to get a REAL train horn on my truck… I’ve decided to punch a 1/2" hole into the side wall of my bed. I think this could be a potential spot.
This is a VERY discreet area… I’ll show you why.
The red dot represents where the hole would be if I drilled in that spot with the arrow on it. Of course the hole wouldn’t be visible because I have a plastic bed liner over my bed. The GREEN line represents the path I would route the 1/2" airline under the plastic bed liner. So far it sounds good.
The hose would then appear out of the bed liner through this opening.
I could then just have the hose stretch across the toolbox into the P3’s manifold…I would of course try to use a strap of some sort to secure the P3 directly in front of the toolbox… That way I can easily take the P3 and toolbox out of my bed and store it in the rear seats of my truck if I absolutely had to haul something.
Easy as cake it seems like… Best of all, I wouldn’t ever see the hole and I wouldn’t feel terrible about putting a hole in my new truck :D.
As far as my 1st install is going with my shockers + tanks + compressor… I’m waiting for my 2nd tank to come in the mail as well as my other fittings. When I get my replacement shockers on Monday (3 of them were replaced under warranty) I’ll take my bumper off to drop them down vertically.
Maybe if I’m lucky, I’ll have enough room to put my compressor somewhere behind my grill.
Hehe, I know I have big ideas, but I’m going to find a way to make this all work… I already know the tanks will fit. I’m not worried anymore.
Looks like you got a good game plan. You do realize however the airline needs to run into the bottom of the manifold right. Do you plan on having the horn sitting on some kind of stand? Couldn’t you mount the horn to your tool box, 4 holes for bolts, 1 hole for the airline to the horn and 1 hole for the airline to enter the tool box? With all the thought and effort your putting into this I can’t wait to see the finished product!
I’m not sure… The toolbox is a simple Black and Decker plastic box… I don’t think putting holes in it would really help me lol. I also have a feeling with the rubber bed mat (which is on top of the factory bed liner) I have, the weight of the horns themselves, and a strap holding them a little bit I think it’ll be fine :).
By the way… I’m looking at my compressor at the moment and it appears to me that included with the compressor is a remote air intake hose that’s optional? I’m pretty sure that’s what it is… If that’s the case, I’m feeling better about trying to mount the compressor in the grill area… I could run the remote line in the engine compartment away from outside weather/rain. I was thinking about rain droplets getting sucked in.
You bet I’m doing a lot of thinking! I have to plan stuff out ahead of time before I actually do it. I’ve always been that way :D. Plus, I don’t want to buy a very expensive horn and realize I don’t have enough air for it because I couldn’t get enough tanks on my vehicle. Or encounter a physical space issue.
The P3 in that video is mounted on a gull wing manifold so be sure the horn you buy comes on that one, this is how the horns sit on the low profile manifold.
After a tough decision, I just can’t back down from getting one… It’s the best choice for me for a few reasons.
It uses less air.
It’s a lower pitch than a K series… I like this A LOT because it won’t grab TOO much attention from people nearby. I kept reading on this forum that a human being is startled more with higher pitched noises… Well, since 90% of the time I use my horn is because of a jerk off cuts me off, etc. I think a low tone is more satisfying :). I feel like its so deep it like surrounds you like a giant burst of bass :D.
I just like the chord it plays more…
I contacted a guy on ebay who sells them new and I asked him what cast his P3’s are. He said this: “this is newest pat pending newest cast.this one actually sounds like the old cast pat. pending p3”.
Sounds good!
Ah, I see now. It doesn’t come with that… Maybe that’s not a big setback. I’ll still buy a P3. I wonder where you get a different manifold…Actually, I’m afraid to ask about the price :D.
Hmmm I wonder if the two seller’s horns sound different from one another. The guy who sells them for $400 new said they are tuned to sound like the old cast. I like the old cast sound :/. Now I have to make up my mind again :(.
As far as I know P3’s can’t be tuned… The P in P series stands for “preset pitch” I could be wrong though I have been once or twice in the past. LOL:D
One of the “experts” should chime in here though.
